The implication of this graphic is that online “social games” – such as you would play on Facebook – are the ultimate manifestation of game design.

But such games are really a dumbing-down of games to appeal to mass-markets that emerged only with the online phenomenon. While they command a large audience, they’re regressive in terms of game design.

However, as the audience matures, we’re seeing an education of the masses into what mass-audience games – other than Solitaire and cards – can be. Hopefullly they will now begin to demand better quality game design, and we can return to furthering the best parts of game development.
