Dojo Wisdom: The Martial Art of Business (my upcoming book)

As previously mentioned, I am excited to share excerpts from my upcoming book. I’m in the process of writing a comprehensive guide that deep-dives into the world of go-to-market (GTM) strategy, blending it with personal experiences and passions that have shaped my career. I will also explore how AI is impacting all of us in sales, marketing, sales enablement, operation, and finance, from insights to planning, pitching and execution. This book will give you a new and fresh perspective on building strong GTM plans, leveraging a consumer and partner-centric approach, and asking the right questions to create real differentiation and impactful storytelling.

The Dojo of Business: A Personal Journey

As I step onto the tatami mat in my dojo, the familiar scent of determination fills the air. The crisp white of my gi symbolizes the humility and openness that comes with being a beginner – a white belt ready to learn. This mindset mirrors my approach to Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies, where every new challenge is an opportunity to absorb knowledge and adapt.

My journey in karate began long after I had established myself in the business world. Yet, as I progressed through the ranks, I found myself drawing unexpected connections between the principles I was learning on the mat and those I had been applying in boardrooms for years.

Shoshin: The White Belt Mindset

The Japanese concept Shoshin comes from Zen Buddhism and means “beginner’s mind. Shoshin emphasizes approaching life with an attitude of openness, eagerness, and a lack of preconceptions, just as a beginner would, even when studying at an advanced level.

In karate, we begin as white belts – blank slates ready to absorb knowledge. Similarly, in the world of GTM, we must approach each new market with the humility of a beginner. This mindset allows us to see opportunities that others might miss. This is very similar to the Day 1 principle of Amazon.

I remember a particular product launch where our team entered a new market. We approached it with the curiosity of white belts, asking questions and challenging assumptions. This openness led us to discover a unique distribution channel that our competitors had overlooked, giving us a significant advantage.

Kaizen: The Path of Continuous Improvement

One of the fundamental principles of karate is “kaizen” – continuous improvement. This concept aligns perfectly with the iterative nature of successful GTM strategies.

The Kaizen concept originated in post-World War II Japan, influenced by American business and quality-management teachers1. It was first practiced by Japanese businesses, notably Toyota, to enhance productivity and quality through continuous improvement.

During a global product rollout, we faced unexpected resistance in certain markets. Instead of pushing forward with our original plan, we embraced the kaizen philosophy. We gathered feedback, adjusted our approach, and re-entered those markets with a refined strategy. The result was a successful launch that exceeded our initial projections.

Zanshin: The State of Relaxed Alertness

Another key principle in karate is “zanshin” – a state of relaxed alertness. The concept of Zanshin originates from ancient Japanese martial arts and Zen Buddhism, embodying a state of heightened awareness and mental focus that extends beyond the physical execution of a technique12. It is often described as “remaining mind” or “lingering spirit,” emphasizing continuous vigilance and readiness.

In GTM, this translates to maintaining a constant awareness of market trends, customer needs, and competitive movements.

During a major product launch, our team’s “zanshin” allowed us to quickly adapt when a competitor unexpectedly released a similar product. We had contingency plans in place and were able to swiftly adjust our messaging and positioning, turning a potential setback into an opportunity to showcase our product’s unique strengths.

Other Values learnt from the dojo

Respecting the Opponent

The dojo teaches us to respect our opponents, to study their strengths and weaknesses. In the business world, this translates to understanding our competitors and our customers with equal depth.

I recall a campaign where we initially underestimated a competitor’s hold on the market. By taking a step back and studying their strategy with the same respect we’d give an opponent in the dojo, we were able to identify gaps in their offering and position our product more effectively.

The Precision of Kata

Kata originated in ancient China as a method to preserve and pass down martial arts techniques, and its goal is to develop proper body mechanics, muscle memory, and mindfulness through prearranged movements.

As I practice my katas, I am reminded of the importance of precision and technique. Each movement must be deliberate, each strike executed with intention. Similarly, in GTM, every marketing message and sales tactic must be thoughtfully crafted to resonate with the target audience.

I once worked on a campaign where we meticulously crafted our messaging, testing and refining each element as carefully as a kata. The result was a campaign that resonated deeply with our audience, driving engagement and conversions beyond our expectations.

The Dojo Community

The dojo also teaches us the importance of community and mutual support. In karate, we train together, learn from each other, and celebrate each other’s achievements. This collaborative spirit is equally crucial in GTM execution.

In one of my most challenging projects, we were tasked with entering a highly competitive market. By fostering a community of partners and stakeholders, much like the supportive environment of a dojo, we were able to leverage collective strengths and overcome obstacles that would have been insurmountable alone.

The AI Revolution: Enhancing the Dojo of Business

As we close this reflection, it’s important to consider how AI is transforming the dojo of business. AI tools are enhancing our ability to gather and analyze market data, providing insights that allow for more precise and targeted GTM strategies.

However, we must remember that AI is a tool, not a replacement for the human elements of strategy and execution. The wisdom gained from experience, the intuition honed through practice, and the creativity sparked by human insight remain irreplaceable.

As I bow out of the dojo, I carry with me the lessons learned both on the mat and in the boardroom. The journey of mastery is never-ending, in karate and in business. With each new challenge, we have the opportunity to apply these timeless principles, continually refining our skills and strategies in the ever-evolving dojo of the business world.
